The City of Vienna has announced to build 7 new municipal housing sites with 1,000 apartments in the coming years. “The effects of the pandemic are a particularly clear reminder of the importance of social housing policy for the well-being of the Viennese population”, as Mayor Michael Ludwig stated. Following the long and successful Viennese tradition of social and affordable housing, providing for more municipal housing is a guarantee for safe housing and high quality of life at affordable prices. The new buildings will be spread all over Vienna, the projects are to create a high-quality and affordable offer in attractive residential environments. The start of construction is planned for 2022.

“More than 60 percent of our citizens live in social – municipal, cooperative and for limited profit – housing and can rely that their living environment space remains secure and affordable for their lifetime. The new municipal housing initiative, together with countless subsidised new building projects, shows that Vienna is continuing on this path in the future,” said Kathrin Gaal, City Councillor for Housing.

Projects in five districts

Seven new building projects will be constructed in the coming years in the 2nd, 3rd, 10th, 22nd and 23rd districts of Vienna. “The new projects, which are currently being very carefully prepared, will offer continuity in the high quality of life. They all offer excellent living and ecological standards and are located in attractive residential areas. All of this is available at affordable rents and without any contribution of own funds”, emphasised Karin Ramser, Director of the Municipal Housing Company of Vienna, responsible for the management of 220.000 flats with around half a million inhabitants (Vienna´s population stands at 1,9 million, which means that one out of four citizens lives in a municipal flat).

“It is very important for us that the new buildings offer flexible floor plans, common rooms, many green and recreational areas and good public transport connections. We have all experienced the Corona lockdown and are happy not only to live at home, but to enjoy the courtyards and our own balcony. This is what I call sustainable and solidary building and living,” emphasises Director Ewald Kirschner of WIGEBA, Vienna´s construction company for municipal housing, who will undertake to build the projects.

The new apartments will comply with the following criteria:

The gross rent is 7.50 euros per square meterNo own resources are necessaryThere is no deposit to be paid when the rental contract is signedThe rental contract is unlimitedAll apartments are allocated by Wiener Wohnen in a fair and transparent manner in accordance with the applicable award criteria
